For those who want a simple, easy to use bike carrier without the need for a roof rack or tow bar the Yakima HalfBack is a great option with features found in higher end models at a great value pricepoint.
Firstly Yakima's SuperCush Cradles and ZipStrips hold your bike in place are super easy to use, are padded to protect your bike and make loading and unloading a breeze. The Bomber external frame is designed for strength while the padded anchor points protect your paint finish. While not in use the HalfBack folds down into a compact unobtrusive size.Â
This carrier uses your bike frame to secure it to the carrier so we don't recommend using it with carbon frame bikes or bikes with delicate paint finish. Further to this, while you can carry just about any bike with a standard horizontal top tube frame if you have a bike with an unusual frame designs may need the Yakima TubeTop adapter to use this carrier.
Installing the HalfBack is a five minute job for one person, please see the instructions pdf below for full details.
Note that this carrier is not a universal fit and will not fit all vehicles, please check Yakima's vehicle fitment guide to ensure it fits your vehicle before ordering. If the guide does not mention the exact model/year of your car then it will unfortunately need to be considered a 'No-Fit'.Â
These style of carriers are generally only used when towball, hitch or roof mounts are not an option. Please be aware that they are in direct contact with the paint and bodywork of your car. You will need to keep your vehicle clean to avoid potential scuffing of paintwork.
Bear in mind that some vehicles may not be able to open the hatch whilst the carrier is mounted.
These style of carriers will likely cover your rear number plate and lights so the use of a lightboard is recommended for safety and legal compliance.
It is your sole responsibilty to check with the local road authority regarding rear overhang regulations to ensure your vehicle and bike carrier combination complies with the law in your state or territory. This information can be found on the road authority's website or by contacting them directly.   Â
If you don't have a towbar you will most likely need to get an auto electrician or installer to fit an electrical outlet to your vehicle to use a lightboard.
Please check your local state laws before using this carrier.

All courier companies occasionally have the same transport problems that can happen to everyone, inclusive of but not limited to: snow blocked roads, closed roads, traffic jams, mechanical breakdown, an inability to find the delivery address or to gain access to it if, for example, it's in a block of flats. We work with some of the best couriers in the business, and overall they provide an outstanding service.
Please note that we cannot be held responsible for the consequences of any delay caused by the failure of our contracted couriers to fulfil their obligations, although we will always do all that is reasonable to provide the goods by the time required. Please also note that the percentage of delayed deliveries is very small, and the percentage of items lost in transit is all but non-existent.
